Is Reliance Industries Limited on track to meet its innovation goals?

Originally an oil and gas company, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is venturing into the realm of deep tech, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mukesh Ambani, CEO of RIL, announced ambitious plans recently to leverage deep tech, particularly AI, to propel the company into the ranks of the top 30 most valuable companies in the world. Despite a decline in the number of innovators in Zeki’s data from 2016 to 2020, RIL has begun to increase the number of Zeki Innovators they hire at a rate of 150 per cent since 2020. Since then, they have hired AI specialists in Machine Learning for Mineral Prospectivity Mapping, Natural Language Processing, and Swarm Intelligence Optimisation Algorithms.

However, despite the overall growth in hiring, the number of AI specialists RIL has recruited has slowed since 2019, particularly when compared to 2012–2018.

To achieve their ambitious AI and company goals, RIL will need to increase their hiring rate of AI specialists and Zeki Innovators.
