Four years of hiring data show Cosine has found genuine commercial traction in AI — and that it has yet to build the technical team its most ambitious claims require.
Cosine is a London-based AI startup that has had a remarkable 2026. Selected by the UK government's Sovereign AI Fund as one of its first compute recipients, it announced in June a coalition of major British institutions — BAE Systems, HSBC, BT, NatWest, Lloyds, Thales and others — to co-design Lumen Sovereign, billed as Britain's first fully sovereign frontier AI model. Its Genie coding agent had already established early benchmark credibility. Defence primes and regulated financial institutions are engaged. By any normal measure of startup momentum, Cosine is doing well.
The hiring record complicates that picture — not because Cosine is failing, but because it reveals a company whose actual technical depth does not match its most prominent claim.
